TITLE: Digital Services Librarian

  1. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The Digital Services Librarian is responsible for assisting in the coordination and provision of digital library resources including digital content such as ebooks, eaudiobooks, emagazines and information databases.  Supports the CAS Library’s social media presence and maintains Library’s content on the website.  Collaborate with IT support staff and other staff members to provide quality services.  Provides in person and virtual reference and research assistance to staff and students and participates in collection development and maintenance.

 

  1. DUTIES

 

1.         Coordinates access and maintenance of the Library’s licensed digital resources, including tasks related to contracts, implementation, staff support, troubleshooting and maintenance of digital resources.

2.         Collects, maintains and reports digital resources and services

3.         Keeps informed of professional and technological developments through participation in professional organisation, workshops, continuing education courses and reading professional materials.

4.         Manages the daily operations of the library/information centre: ensures adequate staffing level during opening hours, checks that loans and returns are correctly processed, ensures that all materials are properly shelved and kept, and provides guidance and professional support to staff and clients on all aspects of the service.

5.         Selects materials (books, videos, films, papers, etc.) for the library after liaison with academic staff in order to meet CAS goals, and places orders.

6.         Classifies new material as per the Dewey Decimal Classification System, updates catalogues, compiles accession lists, and prepares abstracts relevant to CAS courses.

7.         Conducts library orientation sessions for new students to ensure that they benefit fully from the facilities available.  Provides ongoing user education service.

8.         Undertakes a range of administrative duties:  handles correspondence including interlibrary loans, prepares the library annual estimates, represents the library at various bodies, writes management checklist articles, handles annual stocktakes and user surveys, recommends leave, appraises library staff, etc.

9.         Explains and promotes the latest information medium – CD ROMs – on the Library computers.

10.      Orders books for the library as per requisitions received from the Senior Librarian.

11.      Ensures that students respect the rules and regulations of the library and reports any defaulters to SLIRO for action.

12.      Gives regularly library usage reports to SLIRO.

13.      Ensures that students sign the attendance book for security and other academic and administrative reasons.

14.      Informs users of new acquisitions.

15.      If for any reason the library has to be closed during its regular hours, inform all users of the imminent closure at least 24 hours before the closure.

16.      Photocopies, collates and binds teaching material for academic and non-academic staff as per requisitions.

17.      Provides photocopying services for students who produce a valid receipt/photocopying card from the Accounts office.

18.      Liaises with photocopier suppliers on the maintenance and repairs of copiers and advises on unresolved problems

19.      Undertakes any other relevant duties, as required by SLIRO.

 

  1. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

 

 

Bachelor’s degree in Library Studies or equivalent professional qualification plus five years relevant work experience.

Knowledge and Abilities

·         Knowledge of library information technology, systems, products and delivery technology

·         Knowledge of Microsoft systems and tools, social media platforms and web based communication and collaboration tools

·         Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for working with public

·         Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing library technology environment

Communication Skills

·         Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to perform close, detail work involving considerable visual effort and concentration.

·         Possess good interpersonal skills and ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers and supervisors
